ABOUT ELECTRA BATTERY MATERIALS
Electra is planning to build North America’s only fully integrated, localized and
environmentally sustainable battery materials complex. Thus far, in 2024 Electra received
$10 million in Federal government funding and $20 million from the U.S. Department of
Defense to provide support toward the development of its battery materials complex.
Leveraging the company’s own mining assets and business partners, the Electra Battery
Materials Park will host a cobalt sulfate plant with plans to build a nickel sulfate plant and a
large-scale lithium-ion battery recycling facility. Electra’s focus will be to supply the North
American Electric Vehicle market with battery materials to support the manufacturing of
lithium-ion batteries within North America. Electra Battery Materials is an integral part of the
North American battery supply chain, providing low-carbon, sustainable and traceable raw
materials for the region’s fast growing electric vehicle industry.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Below is a list of primary duties and responsibilities for the Health and Safety Superintendent
position at the Cobalt Refinery:

  • Help to guide and educate workers and supervisors on compliance to applicable Federal and Provincial Health and Safety Regulations;
  • Be part of the owners’ team which guides all work at the site during construction, recommissioning and operations;
  • Develop, implement, maintain and update safety policies and procedures in accordance with Provincial and Federal regulations;
  • Be the primary contact for relevant Regulatory Authorities;
  • Be a champion in establishing a safety culture which supports the internal responsibility system within the Occupational Health and Safety Act;
  • Coordinate activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and delegating work accordingly to subordinates;
  • Develop and maintain H&S management system and its associated documentation;
  • Develop and help to guide supervision for crew safety meetings, job observations, accident/incident reporting and other elements of health and safety program;
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, and compliance with safety regulations;
  • Prepare weekly and monthly health and safety reports for management review, to be done using Microsoft Word, Excel, and/or PowerPoint applications;
  • Deliver safety orientation and training for all new and existing employees;
  • Conduct drills and exercises to ensure emergency preparedness;
  • Conduct internal safety audits and risk assessments to identify potential hazards in the workplace;
  • Report to senior management on safety performance and areas for improvement;
  • Work closely with other departments such as operations, training, and human resources;
  • Assist and advise supervisors and workers with safety related issues;
  • Support shipping and receiving functions as requested;
  • Manage budget for health and safety department; create, expedite purchase orders as required; and,
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 5 years’ of relevant experience in a Health and Safety role in the mining industry or industrial environment;
  • Safety accreditation certificates and post-secondary education is an asset;
  • Working knowledge of pertinent Provincial and Federal regulatory requirements;
  • Comprehensive understanding of the development, implementation, and monitoring of H&S systems;
  • Must be local or willing to relocate to Temiskaming Shores, ON;
  • High proficiency of Microsoft Office applications, namely Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications;
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Superior organizational, problem solving and time management skills; and,
  • Excellent written and oral communications.
